The Day of the Wolf

According to some ancient rituals, on Saint Andrew’s day the Dacian New Year was celebrated. This is why this day is also called the Day of the Wolf (after the Dacian symbol of the wolf). In some regions of the country the holiday is called “Luparia” (from the Romanian lup – wolf).

On this day the wolf becomes more agile and can turn his neck which the rest of the year is a lot stiffer. Therefore it becomes more dangerous not only to cattle but also people taking a walk on an alley. On the night of 30th of November, the wolves join together and Saint Andrew – nicknamed the patron of the wolves – divides the booty for the winter to come.
