Fatal sisters/ the Three Weird Sisters
It was believed that on the third night after the birth, the Fatal Sisters or spirits come to the head of the baby's cradle to determine its fate. They spin the thread of life, the first drawing it onto the spindle, while the third and evil one severs the thread. For these wise women the midwife prepared a table with three twisted breads and three glasses of wine, and the mother was not supposed to hear what they were predicting. The destiny foreordained was believed to be implacable, and all that could be done was to placate the wise women with gifts prepared well in advance.
